Pan “Jackie” Liu, Ph.D.
I am an Assistant Professor of Communication at Marian University in Indianapolis. I work across research methodology, media and culture, health communication, journalism, and human–AI communication.
The short version
I study judgment because communication never stops at exposure.
A message becomes an interpretation. Evidence becomes a claim. A piece of information becomes relevant—or it does not. Those moves are often treated as automatic. My work asks who makes them, what warrants them, and what gets lost when two different things are treated as equivalent.
Before becoming a professor, I worked as a reporter, photojournalist, sports broadcaster, technical director, and media producer. That history matters. It keeps my scholarship close to the practical question of how communication is made, understood, and used.
I use Pan Liu for academic work and Jackie Liu for public-facing projects.

Badminton, travel, and Chinese opera.
I began playing badminton in junior high and have competed in China and the United States. I also enjoy travel and long projects that require learning a new system from the inside.
My current personal work includes learning auctioneering and writing a Peking opera script. They may look separate from academic research. In practice, each asks how a form guides attention, timing, meaning, and judgment.
